CAMP SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS
The Rev. Edward L. Merrow Shrine Mont Scholarship Fund
A large part of the funds raised during the recent capital campaign for Shrine Mont Camps came from the Rev. Edward L. Merrow Shrine Mont Scholarship Fund. This fund, given by Merrow’s children – Andrew, Edward and daughter Leith Mullaly – and from parishioners of St. Mary’s, Arlington, is in memory of the Rev. Edward Merrow, who served as rector of Grace, Alexandria, from 1948 to 1974.
Shrine Mont Camps works to create faithful beloved community “on the mountain” through an environment of love, belonging, and acceptance. Beloved community was championed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a world where “all people can share in the wealth of the earth . . . in an all-inclusive spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood” (The King Center website). In support of such a vision, Mr. Merrow spent much of his life working with less advantaged children and was an outspoken pioneer for civil rights and racial inclusion. Because of this, the Edward L. Merrow Shrine Mont Scholarship Fund seeks to encourage a richer diversity among campers while enriching the camp experience for everyone, toward Shrine Mont Camps’ goal of beloved community.
With over 700 campers each summer during seven weeks of programming, Shrine Mont Camps witnesses campers as they experience the transformative power of God’s love shared exponentially. Time spent at Shrine Mont Camps plants seeds of faith and joy that grow over a lifetime. The Edward L. Merrow Shrine Mont Scholarship Fund generously provides financial assistance so that campers may attend camp regardless of the cost, supporting the vital work of faith formation in our children and youth.
There is always more to do as costs for camp increase and more campers request scholarships each year. You can make a difference in the life of a camper this summer by sending a check, donating online http://bit.ly/SMCamps or texting DIOVA CAMP to 73256 to give to the Shrine Mont Camp Scholarship Fund using your text messaging.
